Switching

Virtualization has changed the way people design networks.  In data centers you want the whole network to act like a fabric and not like a traditional Layer 2 and Layer 3 network. Data center switches help network engineers to design high-density data center network fabrics that are optimized for server virtualization and meet the stringent requirements of the next-generation data center and support broader architectural shifts such as unified computing system and cloud computing.

Data Center switches from Cisco offer the following advantages:

  • Infrastructure that can be scaled cost-effectively and that helps you increase energy, budget, and resource efficiency
  • Transport that can navigate the transition to 10 Gigabit Ethernet and unified fabric and can handle architectural changes such as virtualization, Web 2.0 applications, and cloud computing
  • Operational continuity to meet your need for an environment where system availability is assumed and maintenance windows are rare, if not totally extinct

 Unified Fabric:

Reduce Costs and Increase Flexibility

A typical data center environment supports two to three parallel networks: one for data, one for storage, and possibly one for server clustering. In addition, servers often have dedicated interfaces for management, backup, or virtual machine live migration. Supporting these interfaces imposes significant costs related to interfaces, cabling, rack space, upstream switches, and power and cooling.

Unified fabric consolidates these different types of traffic onto a single, general-purpose, high-performance, highly available network that greatly simplifies the network infrastructure and reduces costs. To do all this, a unified fabric must be intelligent enough to identify the different types of traffic and handle them appropriately. In addition to reducing total cost of ownership, unified fabric supports broader data center virtualization by providing consistent, ubiquitous network and storage services to all connected devices.
